The Mergent Dividend Achievers™ Select Index begins with the Broad Dividend Achievers Index but applies additional requirements to screen out illiquid stocks. It does not include Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) or limited partnerships. This index is calculated by the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) and listed under the ticker symbol DVG.
The Mergent Dividend Achievers Broad Index includes all companies that have a history of raising their dividends paid on common stock for at least 10 years.
The Dividend Achievers Select Index is calculated using a modified market capitalization weighting methodology. No one company can make up more than 5% of the total market value. Although all companies in the Select index do pay dividends, the overall yield will be less than that of the Broad Index. The makeup of the Select Index puts more emphasis on growth.
The current number of companies in the Select Index is 225. The 10 biggest companies in it now are:
- Wal-Mart Stores
- American International Group
- Exxon Mobil
- Procter & Gamble Co.
- General Electric
- Chevron Corp.
- Johnson & Johnson
- International Business Machines
- Coca-Cola Co
- PepsiCo
