The Mergent Canadian Dividend and Income Trust Achievers Index tracks Canadian major exchange-traded companies that have five or more years of annual stock dividend increases. It includes Royalty Income Trusts and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).
Canadian Royalty Income Trusts and REITs make up 30% of the total weight of the Index. Therefore, this is one way to add earnings from some top Canadian Royalty income trusts to your portfolio, for additional income, since they have higher yields than the regular corporations. Regular corporations from Mergent's Canadian Dividend Achievers Index make up the remaining 70%. The Canadian Dividend and Income Trust Achievers Index is listed by AMEX (American Stock Exchange( under the ticker symbol ACD.
The Claymore Canadian Dividend and Income Achievers Exchange Traded Fund (EFT) started up on September 8, 2006, and is designed to match Mergent's Canadian Dividend and Income Trust Achievers Index. Its ticker symbol is CDZ, and it trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The management expense ratio is 0.60%.
The top holdings of the Mergent Canadian Dividend and Income Trust Achievers Index as of the end of 2006 are: Rothman's (Canada), Emera, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, AGF Management, Bank of Nova Scotia, Fortis, National Bank of Canada, Great-West Lifeco, Toronto Dominion Bank, and Bank of Montreal.
