Hammerson plc (LSE:HMSO) is a leading Real Estate Investment Trust or UK-REIT operating in the United Kingdom and France. They develop, own and manage prime shopping centers, out of town retail parks and office buildings. They are also listed on the Euronext Paris exchange as a SIIC.
Hammerson's corporate headquarters are in London England. John Nelson is the Chairman of the Board. They are in the FTSE 100 Index. They own sixteen shopping malls and sixteen retail parks with a combined total of 1.6 million square meters of retail space. They own six office buildings with 170,000 square meters. Their worth is around 5.1 billion pounds.
The company began in 1942 when Lewis Hammerson set up a real estate company to invest in property by converting houses into apartments. In 1948 L.W. Hammerson & Co. goes into commercial real estate. In 1954 it goes public and changes its name to Hammerson Property and Investment Trust. January 1, 2007 they converted over to a REIT structure.
