The main indexes for Real Estate Investment Trusts are:

FTSE NAREIT

The FTSE NAREIT U.S. Real Estate Index Series began in 1972. It was the first first benchmark for REITs in the United States. At that time, the market capitalization of REITs amounted to just $1.5 billion, divided among 34 publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trusts.

The FTSE NAREIT Equity REITs Index then included just twelve companies, with a $332 million market cap.

FTSE is short for FTSE International Ltd, a company that produces indexes. NAREIT stands for National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, and is the main organization promoting the overall interests of the REIT industry. Therefore, they combine forces to produces real estate -- especiall REIT -- related indexes.

The indexes started as the NAREIT Domestic Real Estate Index Series, but with the participation of FTSE was rebranded with its current name.

All of the above indexes cover just REITs in the United States. However, they operate in a fast-growing number of many other countries of the world.
