AIMCO (NYSE: AIV) is a real estate estate investment trust that is now the largest U.S. owner and operator of apartment complexes. They have 1,163 apartment communities with 202,337 apartments, in 46 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Their headquarters are in Denver Colorado. They were founded in 1975.

The Apartment Investment and Management Company engages in the acquisition, development, ownership, redevelopment and management of apartment complexes. They have nearly 750,000 residents.

They have a broad range of apartments, from conventional to "affordable" communities. "Affordable" means apartments primarily subsidized by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, and state housing agencies. Or they're financed with tax credits. This means they're occupied by poor people. This sounds like basic Section 8 housing. It also provides apartment management services to other property owners.

The city with the most number of apartments is Indianapolis Indiana. Their properties include: Boulder Creek, Meadow Creek, Montecito, Paradise Palms, Mesa Royale, Village Green at Brookhill, Eagle's Nest, Mountain View, Tatum Gardens, Willow Bend, Peachtree Park, Hillmeade, Las Brisas, Village Crossing, Ocean Oaks, Pine Shadows, Captiva Club, Copperfield I and II, Coventry Square, Arbors at Westheimer, Sunbury Downs, Stoney Brook, Windward at the Villages, Hills at the Arboretum, Pride Gardens, Solana Vista, Woodhollow, Freedom Place Club, Atriums of Plantation, Lake Johnson Mews, Tar River Estates, Autumn Run, Peakview Place, Copper Mill, Village in the Woods, Woods of Inverness, Sun River Village, Anton Square, Big Walnut, Blakewood, Covington Pointe, Tierra Palms, Druid Hills, Glendale Terrace, Gotham, Governor's Park, Lake Castleton, Kalmia, Landau, Hibben Ferry I, Mill Run, Plantation Gardens, Quail Run, Patman Switch, Sienna Bay, Swift Creek, and Sycamore Creek.

Therefore, AIMCO is a REIT that is providing basic living quarters for a large range of people, from the poor to the affluent, and they are well diversified through the geography of the United States.
